The cycle lane between Peacehaven and Newhaven alongside the A259 is due to be repaired in the coming weeks.

Lewes MP Maria Caulfield welcomed news of the work to make good the damaged surface, saying that no had been able to use the route safely for years.

She said that she had lobbied East Sussex County Council to repair the stretch of cycle path.

Mending the surface would not only make it safer for cyclists, she said, but for drivers too because currently cyclists use the road.

The Conservative MP said: “For too long we have had a cycle lane in Newhaven that no one has been able to use.

“The surface is damaged and is not currently safe for cyclists and so many people use the road instead which can cause slow and dangerous traffic.”

Alternatively, the unsafe surface deters people from cycling at all.

She added: “If we have a cycle lane we may as well use it and I welcome the repairs being done by East Sussex County Council.”
