Up to 5cm of rain could fall on Sussex overnight, the Met Office is warning.
The yellow be aware warning, which runs from 10pm tonight until midday tomorrow, says rain is expected to become persistent and heavy tonight.
At present, there is only one flood warning in force, in Fittleworth where the Western Rother could break its banks.
The Met Office says: “An area of rain is expected to reach parts of southern England overnight Tuesday, becoming persistent and heavy in places for a time.
“Much of the warning area will see 15-20 mm of rain with 30-40 mm in some areas. There is a lower chance of 50 mm of rain in a few places, more likely for the Isle of Wight, Sussex and Kent, before rain eases and clears by early afternoon.
“Given recent wet weather, some disruption to travel and infrastructure is likely.”
The flood warning for Fittleworth says: “River levels remain high in Fittleworth, where minor flood impacts are currently expected to continue. 20-30mm of rain is forecast on Tuesday night through to Wednesday morning.
“If as much rain falls as predicted, flooding could be possible along the Western Rother. From 04:00 on 27/11/2024 minor flooding could affect fields, rural roads and gardens in Liss and Sheet.
“From 9am on 27/11/2024, flooding could also affect gardens in Iping, Stedham and Midhurst.
“From 1pm on 27/11/2024, floodwater could approach properties at Lodsbridge, near Selham and Fittleworth Mill, and nearby properties in Fittleworth.
“Almost no rainfall is predicted Wednesday afternoon, through to the weekend. The river should begin to fall by 3pm on 27/11/2024 in Liss, but nearer Fittleworth, river levels might not fall until Friday 29/11/2024.
“It is thought river levels could end up a little higher than following Storm Bert.
“Early actions to reduce potential impacts at Lodsbridge and Fittleworth are encouraged.”
