Plans to build seven homes in Petworth are to be considered by Chichester District Council.
The application from Newman Developments Ltd seeks permission to build four three-bedroom and three two-bedroom houses on land next to The Watermill, at Halfway Bridge, Lodsworth.
A design statement submitted with the application said: “The existing application site and the flat-roofed buildings within it are of absolutely no
merit architecturally and are considered to considerably detract from the character of the hamlet.
“The aim of the new proposed development is to considerably improve the visual appearance of the site with a suitable residential development, with a ‘traditional’ cottage design, utilising local materials including local stone walls with brick dressings, plain tiled roofs and white painted timber windows and doors.”
The plans also included storage space for bins and bikes as well as one parking space per home on the other side of the road.
The council has received letters both supporting and objecting to the plans.
Concerns raised by objectors included over-development, light pollution and parking issues.
But supporters felt the development would be ‘a sensible, creative and sensitive user of a brownfield site which is currently an eyesore and quite out of place’.
