Worthing council budget deficit covered

Two multi-storey car parks in Worthing are facing further construction delays.

The Worthing Integrated Care Centre (WICC) and Buckingham Road car parks in Worthing town centre are facing more delays, according to Worthing Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration Caroline Baxter (Lab, Central).

The WICC and its accompanying car park on Stoke Abbott Road, were expected to be completed by May 23 this year, but works should now be finished by summer, Cllr Baxter said at the council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday, June 11.

The WICC was originally expected to be completed in the summer of 2023, after work started in February, 2022, with costs increasing from £34million initially to £42.4million this year.

The Buckingham Road car park has been closed for works since 2021, which were planned to be completed by the summer of 2022. Cllr Baxter stating in November last year they hoped to reopen in February, 2024.

Cllr Baxter said materials for the works were coming from Europe, and completion was ‘at the mercy’ of delivery times and schedules – but that the council expected it to be opening ‘imminently’.
