Former West Sussex school to be sold

West Sussex County Council has agreed to sell the former Warninglid Primary School.

The Victorian building in, Slaugham Lane, has stood empty since 2021, when pupils were transferred to the new Woodgate Primary School, in Pease Pottage, and it was declared surplus to requirements.

The decision to sell was taken on Monday (June 3) by Jeremy Hunt, cabinet member for finance and property.

A report from Andrew Edwards, the council’s assistant director for property and assets, said the council had received eight bids for the property by November 2023, with the process finally closing in January.

While the council has not revealed who the successful bidder was or how much it will receive, the address was valued with the Land Registry at between £500,001 and £1m in August 2021.

The report added: “Following the primary school’s move to the new school in Pease Pottage, the site was no longer required for educational use.

“An options appraisal of the asset was undertaken and the site was considered against a range of options including for possible social, community or environmental use, particularly where this could complement the council’s ambitions relating to climate change.

“No viable alternative uses were identified.”
