Two schoolgirls have been arrested after a 64-year-old man was attacked and suffered facial injuries during a disturbance at an Indian restaurant.

Others were suspected of having been involved in the incident which was allegedly filmed, with footage posted on social media.

Sussex Police said today (Tuesday 21 May): “An investigation has been launched following an assault in Barnham.

“Police are appealing for information after a report of a disturbance at the Passage to India, The Square, at 10pm on Sunday (19 May).

“It is reported a 64-year-old man was assaulted and sustained facial injuries. The restaurant was also damaged.

“A 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl, from Yapton, were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

“They have both been released on bail, pending further inquiries.

“Officers are looking to speak with other individuals who are believed to be involved in the incident.

“Chief Inspector Will Keating-Jones, Chichester and Arun District Commander, said: “This is an unacceptable and unprovoked attack.

“Those who go to work should not have to tolerate this behaviour and we are taking this report extremely seriously.

“An investigation is under way and we will hold those who are responsible accountable for their actions.

“We are aware of a post on social media showing the incident.

“I would urge users to not speculate or share it at this time and report any evidence to Sussex Police.

“Witnesses or anyone with any information or footage is asked to report it to police online or call 101, quoting serial 1327 of 19/05.”
