Man suffers serious injuries in A259 hit and run

The A23 was partially closed after a Royal Mail articulated lorry crashed near Gatwick airport.

One lane was shut and drivers were unable to join the road at the Longbridge roundabout near the north terminal.

Sussex Traffic Watch said that an HGV had crashed by the roundabout in a tweet last night (Saturday 18 May).

And Royal Mail said: “We can confirm a Royal Mail van was involved in an incident on the A23 on Saturday.

“We are pleased to confirm that, following the incident, the driver of the Royal Mail vehicle has not suffered any serious injuries.

“We have launched an investigation into what happened and are helping the police with their inquiries.”

The road remained partially closed for hours after the crash while Sussex Police investigated the incident and then the wreckage was removed.

The Royal Mail has a main sorting office just off the A23 on the south side of the airport.

This morning, the road was open.
