Firefighters spent about two hours tackling a house fire, which started in the kitchen of a property in Battle, and dealing with aftermath.

Four fire engines were sent to deal with the blaze in Lillybank Crescent, Battle, just after midday on Wednesday (8 May).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that fire engines were dispatched from Battle, Bexhill and Bohemia Road and The Ridge, n Hastings, after a call-out at 12.18pm.

The fire service said: “The fire is believed to have started from a frying pan alight in the downstairs kitchen.”

Crews evacuated people from the house and used breathing apparatus and a hose-reel jet to tackle the fire.

At the time, the fire service said: “Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and local residents to keep windows and doors closed.”

Later the fire service added: “As of 1.20pm, the incident has been scaled down to two fire engines.

“The property is now ventilated. Police and the ambulance service are also in attendance.”

In a second update, the fire service added: “As of 1.48pm, the incident was scaled down to one fire engine.

“At the height of the incident crews used four breathing apparatus and one hose-reel jet to extinguish the fire.

“Firefighters also used a positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan for smoke clearance and a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots.

“Final crews left the scene by 2.30pm.

“The fire was accidental and crews have also completed a ‘quick strike’, providing targeted home safety advice to local residents.”
