Sussex officer due to face court today over death of man hit by police car

Arthur Hölscher-Ermert

A police officer charged with causing death by dangerous driving has been remanded to appear at the Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, in London.

PC Christopher Corker, 39, of Shandon Road, Worthing, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this morning (Tuesday 9 January).

Corker was charged with causing the death of Arthur Hölscher-Ermert in Peacehaven on Saturday 30 April 2022.

Mr Hölscher- Ermert, 27, from Newhaven, was on foot when he was struck by a police car at just after 11.10pm.

He was confirmed dead at the scene by the A259 coast road in Peacehaven.

The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for investigation.

The IOPC passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in April last year and the CPS authorised the charge.

This morning, Corker spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

He has indicated a plea of not guilty, the court was told.

The Sussex Police officer was remanded on unconditional bail to appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday 6 February.

A second officer was investigated on suspicion of perverting the course of justice but no charge has been brought.
