A 38-year-old man has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash on the M23.

Sussex Police said today (Thursday 9 July) that emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the M23 at Junction 9 just before 1am yesterday after a van hit road worker Anthony Howe.

The police said: “The 65-year-old man, from Kent, was sadly declared deceased at the scene.

“His next of kin are aware and our thoughts remain with his family during this time.

“The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

“Vilius Domarkas, 38, of no fixed address, was charged the same day with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

“He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 9 July and was remanded in custody until he is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday 6 August.”

Detective Sergeant Rob Baldwin said: “We are continuing to support the victim’s family following this tragic incident.

“The investigation remains ongoing and we continue to encourage anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant information including dashcam footage to come forward.

“Information and dashcam footage can be shared by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk, quoting Operation Oakcross.”
