Sewage scammers drain victims accounts

Worthing man charged after Christmas Eve car chase

A pair of sewage scammers are conning people into handing over their bank cards before draining their accounts – with at least £28,000 stolen in recent weeks.

Sussex Police said today (Wednesday 24 June): “Police are urging the public to remain vigilant as a drainage scam in the Adur and Worthing area is investigated.

“Two men are reported to be operating together the area. Typically, they knock at people’s front doors claiming to be from the council and stating there is an issue with drainage or sewage in the area.

“They ask for an initial £10 to £50 deposit to secure the services of a drainage company, then ask for the victims’ card and PIN so they can authorise the payment in their van.

“They then make off with the bank card and max them out at local cash machines.

“At least five people have reported falling victim to this scam in the Adur and Worthing area since May – one lost £27,000 while the other four lost a combined £1,300.”

Detective Constable Sophie Chaplain, of Worthing CID, said: “These suspects are targeting elderly and vulnerable people and taking huge sums of money from their accounts.

“We know they have been operating in the local area as recently as last week.

“We’re urging any further victims or anyone who has any information or doorbell footage that can assist in our investigation to please come forward.

“You can report it online or call 101, quoting crime reference 47260144219.

“We’re also urging the public to remain vigilant and look out for your family, friends and neighbours, especially the vulnerable.

“Finally, and most crucially, never give your PIN (personal identification number) to anyone, no matter who they say they are. Make sure you take the steps to protect yourself from fraud.”
