A man has been charged with murdering a woman and assaulting police.

Sussex Police said today (Sunday 17 May): “A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Durrington.

“Police were called to an address in Durrington Lane, Worthing, at about 7.50pm on Thursday 14 May following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

“Emergency services attended the scene, where a 65-year-old woman was sadly pronounced deceased.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and assaulting a police constable in the execution of his or her duty and held in police custody.

“On Saturday 16 May, Alexandru Nechifor, 37, of Durrington Lane, Worthing, was charged with murder and two counts of assaulting a police constable in the execution of his or her duty.

“He remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Monday (18 May).

“Inquiries are ongoing and it has been established that the victim and suspect were known to each other.”

Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama, from the Major Crime Team, said: “This remains fast moving investigation and our thoughts continue to be with the woman’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

“We understand this incident will have caused concern in the local community. However, we continue to believe it to be an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.”

Sussex Police added: “Anyone with information which could help the investigation is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting Operation Bucklow.”
