Oyez, oyez, oyez! Town crier auditions to be held

Auditions for the role of town crier are to be held in Newhaven this spring.

A vacancy has come up for the voluntary role, which mainly involves weekends and evening.

The job ad says the post is open to anyone aged 18 and over, and specifies an outgoing personality, a sense of humour and the ability to project your voice as requirements of the role.

Applications are now open, and Newhaven Town Council will draw up a shortlist by 21 March.

Shortlisted applicants will then be interviewed at the town council meeting on 8 April, where they will also be expected to perform a sample cry.

The town council said: “If you possess a booming voice, a love for public announcements, and a flair for the dramatic, with a passion for Newhaven and a good knowledge of our town, this noble role could be yours.

“Duties include spreading important news, making special announcements, sharing local treasures with the fine folks of Newhaven and adding a touch of grandeur to our beloved town. You will be able to engage and entertain audiences of all ages and embrace and promote the rich history of Newhaven town.

“Be advised that this role will be mainly on weekends and in the evenings and it is a voluntary role.

“Do you have the spirit and the voice, come forth and share your talent! Apply now and become the voice of the community.”

The advert also specifies that the town crier will have to write their own cries, starting each with Oyez, oyez, oyez, and finishing with God Save the King.

Post holders are not allowed to cry anywhere for a party political purpose, or for any illegal activities, or to behave dishonestly at any time.

Crying at commercial activities is usually encouraged, but not at events which would bring the town into disrepute, such as the opening of a sex shop or arms fair.

The post is permanent after a one-year probationary period.
