A former school could soon be put up for sale, more than four years after it closed its doors for the final time.
Next Tuesday, Cllr Nick Bennett, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for resources, is set to consider proposals to dispose of Broad Oak Primary School.
The school closed its doors in August 2020, but the building and the land it sits on is still owned by the county council.
In a report to Cllr Bennett, officers say the council had looked into using the building itself or renting it out to another organisation, but ultimately consider a sale of the site to be the best course of action.
In the report, a council spokesman said: “The property is likely to be considered as a small residential development site, subject to gaining the necessary planning consents, and it is understood from local agents that there is a good level of demand in the open market for sites of this nature.
“The disposal of the property will result in a capital receipt. Capital receipts are an important source of funding, and the council seeks to maximise the levels of these resources.
“The funds will be used to reduce the borrowing required to fund the Schools Basic Need capital programme, which is a rolling programme that sets out a 10-year school improvement works programme across the county.
“The disposal of the property on the open market is therefore considered to be the most appropriate strategy.”
If agreed by Cllr Bennett, the property would be marketed for sale with further details to be delegated to senior council officers.
