Eleven pieces of outdoor gym equipment for adults will be installed along a 1.5km stretch of the Cuckoo Trail between Polegate and Hailsham in May 2024.
The installation work by Wealden District Council will take place between Sayerland Lane and Summerhill Lane. The section of the trail will remain open during this period however users are asked to be mindful whilst the works are progressing.
The council says it recognises the many physical and mental health benefits of outdoor activities and the importance of ensuring it can be used by everyone. The Cuckoo Trail is a safe and accessible route for walking, running, and cycling.
The Cuckoo Trail is a 14-mile path that runs from Heathfield to Polegate and Eastbourne, passing through some of the most picturesque countryside in Wealden. The trail is mainly flat and off-road, making it an excellent option for people of all ages and abilities to be active and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
A Wealden council spokesperson said, “The works that are happening on the Cuckoo Trail are moving at a rapid rate. We are keen to maintain the trail and make sure that everyone can access the trail and use it.
“It is a great health benefit to the residents of Wealden and surrounding areas. The new gym equipment includes parallel bars, a dip bench and stepping stones and will enable trail users to do several body weight exercises.
A series of improvements, as set out in the Cuckoo Trail Masterplan, are currently being developed for the Cuckoo Trail which will deliver improvements over the next year. The project is fully funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is part of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda which gives local authorities the opportunity to improve pride of place and increase life chances by investing in communities, supporting local businesses and people.
