Southern said on X/Twitter this afternoon: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Gatwick Airport and Purley. All lines (via Redhill) are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident.

“Lines are blocked between Gatwick and Purley via Redhill. Some trains will still run between these stations, but they will not call at stations via Redhill. If you are travelling via Redhill, you will need to use an alternative route to reach your destination.

“Lines are blocked between Gatwick and Purley via Redhill. Some trains will still run between these stations, but they will not call at: – Earlswood – Redhill – Merstham – Coulsdon South

“If you’re travelling to/from Earlswood, Redhill, Merstham or Coulsdon South you will need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. This will extend your journey time by up to 45 minutes so please allow extra time to complete your journey.

And several hours later they warned: “All lines have now reopened between Gatwick and Purley. We’re working to return to our scheduled timetable, but please continue to check journey planners and station information boards before you travel – trains are expected to be delayed up to 20 minutes, and may be subject to short-notice revisions.

It is now understood that all Southern Railways services are now back to normal as of Tuesday evening.
