The A22 was closed as a fire tore through a motorhome dealership yesterday (Saturday 2 December).
Eight fire engines were sent to the scene as crews fought the flames and brought the blaze under control with no reports of any casualties.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that the first 999 call was made at 2.24pm to report “an industrial building fire in Golden Cross, Chiddingly”.
The fire service said: “Eight fire engines have been sent to the scene and crews are using three main jets and firefighting foam to tackle the fire.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and local residents to keep windows and doors closed.
“Sussex Police have put road closures in place on the A22 and in surrounding roads including Charlington Way, Coldharbour Road, Camberlot Road, Nash Street, and Burgh Hill Road.
“These will remain in place while the fire service deals with the fire.”
In an update the fire service said: “As of 4.13pm, firefighters continue to the tackle the fire using three firefighting foam jets, two main jets and the aerial ladder platform.
“Road closures are in place. Please continue to avoid the area and local residents please keep windows and doors closed.”
Another update said: “As of 5.33pm, steady progress is being made. We continue to work with other agencies and partners.
“Road closures remain in place. Please avoid the area. Local residents please continue to keep windows and doors closed.”
Later the fire service said: “As of 6.30pm, steady progress continues to be made and the incident is being scaled down to four fire engines.”
And in the evening the fire service added: “As of 7.27pm, the incident has been scaled down and crews are damping down and turning over to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
“Road closures remain in place so please continue to avoid the area. There are no casualties reported.
“A fire investigation will take place in due course.”
