Plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit in Alfriston will move ahead to the next stage, following sign off from a senior county councillor.
On Monday (November 20), Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, agreed for officers to draw up detailed designs of a number of traffic management measures in Alfriston.
The lower speed limit is expected to come alongside works at the northern and southern approaches to the village, which would be designed to physically slow down traffic entering the village and give exiting vehicles priority over others. The council is also looking at ways to discourage Heavy Goods Vehicles from travelling through the village.
During the meeting, division councillor Stephen Shing drew attention to calls for some additional traffic calming measures in the area, noting how the parish council wanted to see bollards installed in High Street. Officers, however, said the inclusion of these could delay the works coming forward.
Cllr Dowling said: “I am aware this has been going on for a very long time … I recall a meeting here before covid with various parish members.
“We certainly don’t want anything to delay this. We’ve got this far, we wish this to go forward. Residents may wish things to be added, but this is what we’ve got in front of us today.
“I’m not wishing hold anything up, so I’m very happy to approve this going forward.”
In making her decision, Cllr Dowling noted the results of a public consultation on the proposals. This consultation received 139 direct response, 89 per cent of whom were in favour of the works.
The consultation also sought views on plans to remove the existing road surface in High Street/North Street. Most respondants did not support these proposals, although there was some support (42 per cent) for replacing the road surface in Market Square.
