Woman jailed for stabbing man as he tried to sleep

Marlena Meczynska-Shiibashi

A woman has been jailed for seven years after she poured bleach in her boyfriend’s eyes as he dozed off in bed and then stabbed him in the groin.

Marlena Meczynska-Shiibashi, 38, a talented pianist and music teacher, attacked Ivan Darch at her home in Mount Pleasant Road, in Ore, Hastings, because she was cross with him.

Meczynska-Shiibashi was angry because Mr Darch had spurned her advances and wanted to go to sleep in April last year.

When the police arrived at the property, she said: “I didn’t just stab him in the leg, you know. I poured bleach in his eyes.”

According to Meczynska-Shiibashi, she was stoned and drunk when she plunged a knife into Mr Darch’s inner thigh in a rage.

Mr Darch, 50, said that since the attack he continued to have flashbacks and this had left him with anxiety and depression.

At Lewes Crown Court on Friday (13 September), Judge Christine Laing, the honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove, passed an extended sentence of 11 years and ruled that Meczynska-Shiibashi was “dangerous”.

This means that she is regarded as posing a realistic risk of committing other offences and causing further serious harm. The extended sentence is intended to protect the public.

As a result, she must serve at least two thirds of her seven-year prison sentence before she can even be considered for release. And once released, she must serve at least four more years on licence.

Meczynska-Shiibashi admitted causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent but Judge Laing rejected her basis of plea in which she claimed that Mr Darch had abused her.”

Sussex Police said: “Following a thorough investigation by the Safeguarding Investigation Unit, no evidence was found.”

Detective Constable Sally Coleman, the investigating officer, said: “This was a violent and distressing case for the victim who is still dealing with the impact and consequences.

“The court found that Meczynska-Shiibashi was angry with the victim and carried out an unprovoked attack.

“Officers arrived and, while the victim was on the floor bleeding, she showed no concern, stepping over the victim and asking officers if she could confirm where she had stabbed him.

“This was a complex investigation. We were determined to get justice and we are pleased that a dangerous offender is now in prison serving a significant sentence.”

Judge Laing imposed an indefinite restraining order, forbidding Meczynska-Shiibashi from contacting Mr Darch in the future.
