Sussex officer due to face court today over death of man hit by police car

A trial date has been set for a Sussex Police officer charged with causing death by dangerous driving in a patrol car.

PC Christopher Corker, 40, faces a trial by jury over the death of Arthur Hölscher-Ermert, 27, who was on foot when he was hit by a police car in Peacehaven.

Mr Hölscher-Ermert, from Newhaven, was knocked over just after 11.10pm on Saturday 30 April 2022 and died at the scene.

This morning (Tuesday 6 February), Corker, of Shandon Road, Worthing, appeared at the Central Criminal Court – better known as the Old Bailey – in London.

He appeared on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

Corker was not arraigned – or formally asked to enter a plea to the charges.

Instead, Judge Richard Marks adjourned the case until Friday 10 May when Corker is expected to plead to the charges.

The judge also set a provisional trial date of Monday 5 August at the Old Bailey, with any trial expected to last up to three weeks.

Corker was granted unconditional bail as before.
