Fire crew tackled a blaze overnight in a house close to a 180-year-old church just off the A259.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene in St Mark’s Close, Bexhill, close to St Mark’s Church in the Little Common area of Bexhill.

The fire started shortly before 10pm last night (Monday 13 November) as closures were starting on the A259 for two weeks of resurfacing work.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 9.51pm on Monday 13 November to reports of a fire in a first floor maisonette in St Mark’s Close, Bexhill, affecting the first floor and the roof space.”

Firefighters were sent from Bexhill, The Ridge and Bohemia Road, in Hastings, Eastbourne, Pevensey and Burwash.

The fire service said: “At the height of the incident, six fire engines were in attendance, an aerial ladder platform and the incident control unit.”

At 6.30am today the fire service added: “As of 1.50am there were no signs of hotspots. A reinspection is taking place this morning.

“A fire investigation is also due to take place today.

“Sussex Police are on scene. Please continue to avoid the area.”

The resurfacing work is being carried out on behalf of National Highways along the A259 between Barnhorn and Little Common.

The agency said that the work was due to take place between now and the spring, with phase one due to last for a fortnight.

National Highways said: “For the first phase we’ll be closing the A259 between Coneyburrow Lane and Brooklands Road weeknights, 8pm to 6am, from Monday 13 November for two weeks.

“During the closures, a signed diversion will be in place going in both directions via the A22, A271, A269 and A2036.”
