A man’s body was found and recovered by the police, coastguard and a lifeboat crew after a vehicle was left close to the cliffs at Eastbourne.
Officers found the abandoned vehicle while on patrol a fortnight ago at about 4.50am on Tuesday 6 October.
They had concerns for the welfare of the driver and started a search which ended when the man’s body was found.
They were joined in the search by the coastguard helicopter and ground-based coastguard rescue teams from Eastbourne, Newhaven and Birling Gap and by the Newhaven RNLI lifeboat.
Sussex Police said: “The man’s body was recovered by HM Coastguard and RNLI and his next of kin were informed.
“Our thoughts remain with them during this tragic time.”
Sussex Police said that the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious and a report has been prepared for the coroner.
This morning (Tuesday 20 October) the East Sussex coroner Laura Bradford is due to open an inquest into the death of 40-year-old Gareth Lloyd Williams at the coroner’s court in Lewes.
