Armed police were brought in to deal with a siege at an address in Newhaven yesterday afternoon (Sunday 26 July).
Sussex Police said that there were concerns for the safety of a child as well as the man himself who was armed with a knife.
Specialist negotiators were sent to the scene and the force said: “Police attended an address in Hanson Road, in Newhaven, at around 4.45pm on Sunday 26 July to make inquiries.
“During the incident, the occupant of the property armed himself with a knife.
“Firearms officers responded and the occupant barricaded himself inside the property.
“A police cordon was put in place around the address while officers responded to the incident to ensure the safety of those inside the property, responding officers and members of the public.
“Officers, including specialist negotiators, engaged with the individual.
“The incident has now concluded and a 48-year-old man, from Newhaven, has been arrested on suspicion of affray, assaulting an emergency worker, attempted grievous bodily harm, child neglect and non-fatal strangulation.
“We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while officers dealt with the incident.”
