Three months of work are due to start at a railway station as part of a multimillion-pound programme aimed at improving pedestrian safety.
East Sussex County Council highways team said today (Wednesday 20 May): “Upgrades outside Hastings train station will improve safety for pedestrians and enhance access to the public transport hub and surrounding area.
“The work, scheduled to start on Tuesday 26 May and take three months, will be taking place at the junction of Station Approach, Cornwallis Terrace and Havelock Road.
“It includes the installation of new crossings, kerbs, carriageway and footway surfaces as well as upgrading the streetlighting and making minor drainage adjustments.
“The work due to take place near Hastings train station will make it easier for those travelling in via train and for buses stopping at the station to access the town centre and seafront.
“Pedestrians will also find it easier and safer to walk to the train station using new crossing points across Devonshire Road.
“Plans include upgrading traffic signals and installing new wider puffin crossings which will allow for more pedestrians to cross at the same time.
“A new carriageway will be constructed and ‘high friction surfacing’ will be refreshed which will also help improve pedestrian safety.
“The upgrades are part of one of the schemes identified under the Hastings and Bexhill Movement and Access Package (HBMAP) which also includes new crossings at Albert Road and the A259.
“It is funded via a £9 million Local Growth Fund secured by East Sussex County Council and links to the wider town centre infrastructure improvement scheme which is expected to start in the autumn.
“The aim of the HBMAP scheme is to enhance connectivity between key destinations in Hastings, Bexhill and St Leonards.
“The programme includes improvements to junction capacity to reduce congestion, increased cycle network coverage, enhanced walking paths and better public transport infrastructure.
“The scheme in Hastings will also give the area an uplift, tying in with the Green Connections scheme in Havelock Road, transforming the route between the station and the seafront.”
Road closures linked to the work are due to be limited to night-time to minimise disruption to road users including buses.
