More than a third of electric blankets failed a safety test, according to data from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
The finding – that 37 per cent posed a risk to their users – was shared with members of a council scrutiny committee on Monday (2 December).
The fire service said: “In October, the fire service tested 286 electric blankets owned by members of the public and 105 were safely disposed of after being considered unsafe or faulty.”
Seven events were held where people could bring along an electric blanket to be checked, according to a report to the council’s Fire and Rescue Service Scrutiny Committee.
Some were tested during homes safety visits as the service tries to reduce the risk of fires starting in people’s homes.
The figures formed part of an update to the committee on progress against the fire service’s Community Risk Management Plan.
A new Community Risk Management Plan 2026-30 is in preparation, with the fire service inviting views through a short questionnaire until Sunday 15 December.
