Chichester District Council is to take up to £50,000 from its reserves to pay for festive events and activities in December.
The money was approved during a meeting of the cabinet of Tuesday (September 3).
Officers had been tasked with coming up with alternatives after it was decided not to allow an ice rink to be set up in Priory Park this year.
A programme of arts and crafts will be held within The Guildhall, in Priory Park, between December 7 and 15, complementing the Christmas Market which will be held in the city centre at the same time.
They are likely to include musical performances, a pantomime from Chichester Fringe, and an 80s-themed silent disco, as well as family friendly arts and crafts such as making Christmas decorations.
The Novium Museum is also exploring festive storytelling and there will be a programme of local choirs and musicians performing.
The council is also considering including a vintage fairground ride, festive pictures, and an eco-friendly Christmas Tree in the park.
Leader Adrian Moss said: “What we’re trying to do is increase the footfall in the city and make Chichester an exciting place to come for all of our residents and [bring] visitors from outside into Chichester to really enjoy the festive period.
“This is our investment for our district and our community.”
Details will be announced soon. Some of the events/activities will be free of charge. Tickets for the others will be available via The Novium box office.
