A man is in prison awaiting sentence for trying to groom a child for sex, police said today (Tuesday 27 August).
Brian Jones, also known as Bryan Jones, 64, was arrested in Horsham last Thursday (22 August) having travelled there to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old.
Jones, who made the arrangements online, was nabbed by officers from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) and Sussex Police.
He admitted three charges in court the next day and was remanded in custody until Friday 20 September when he is due to be sentenced at Lewes Crown Court.
Jones, of Southview Road, Headley Down, Bordon, pleaded guilty to one count of arranging or facilitating commission of a child sexual offence.
He also admitted two counts of travelling to try to meet someone under 16 so that he could commit an offence against that child.
After he was charged, Jones was refused bail and the next day he was produced at Crawley Magistrates’ Court.
Detective Inspector Andy Hedley, of SEROCU, said: “This arrest and subsequent conviction is the latest in our work to ensure that those who are prepared to commit sexual offences against children are brought to justice and that our communities in the south east are kept safe from harm.”
SEROCU said: “If you are concerned about your thoughts or behaviour towards children or those of someone else, please seek help and support via the Stop it Now confidential helpline on 0808 1000 900. Further support is available from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation.
“If offences have been committed, please report this to your local police force by calling the non-emergency number 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
