A teenage boy has died in a “tragic incident” in the sea on a school trip, police said this morning (Wednesday 3 July).

Sussex Police said: “An investigation is under way following the tragic death of a boy off West Wittering beach in Chichester yesterday (Tuesday 2 July).

“Emergency services were called to concern for a 17-year-old boy’s welfare in the sea at around 1pm.

“He was airlifted to hospital where he was sadly confirmed deceased.

“His next of kin have been informed.

“The boy was part of a group from Uxbridge College, in London, who had visited the area for a school trip.”

Detective Inspector Darren Taylor said: “This was an absolutely tragic incident and I would like to express my sincere condolences to the boy’s loved ones at this heartbreaking time.

“A police investigation, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, is under way to establish the full facts.

“We are asking anyone who has any information that could help to contact us online or via 101, quoting Operation Redhill.”
