Firefighters spent two hours tackling a blaze in an empty takeaway this morning (Tuesday 30 April).
The fire service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 8.41am to reports of smoke coming from a building in Bexhill.
“As of 9.10am, four fire engines are at the commercial premises in London Road.
“The fire is in a kitchen of a vacant takeaway and firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus while putting out the fire.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.
“If you live near by, please keep doors and windows closed as there is a lot of smoke in the area.
“There are no reports of injuries.”
The first of two updates said: “As of 9.54am, the incident is being scaled down to two fire engines.”
A second update followed, saying: “The fire is out. As of 10.40am the incident continues to be scaled down.
“East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police request members of the public continue to stay away from scene until further notice.
“The road currently remains closed.”
