Serious rail disruption in West Sussex today

A loss of electricity near Arundel Junction has caused a severe fault with lineside equipment in the area. This has affected all signalling systems in the area.

Trains heading between Brighton and Portsmouth will also be affected. There have been several cases of signal failure in West Sussex this week which have been further impacted by industrial action by rail union ASLEF. Services from London to Gatwick and Brighton have also been disrupted by a train failure at Earlswood.

⚠️ There are no trains between Worthing, Barnham and Horsham until further notice ⚠️

⛔ Do not attempt to travel to or from these stations.

ℹ️ Service information to follow 👇

According to a train service update from Southern Railway:

“A problem with line-side equipment in the Barnham / Worthing / Horsham area means trains may be cancelled or revised.

“Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice:

“No trains will run on routes between Worthing, Barnham, and Horsham until further notice.

“Trains which run on routes between these stations will be amended as follows:

Southampton and London Victoria services will instead run between Southampton Central and Barnham. London Victoria and Bognor Regis services will instead run between London Victoria and Horsham. Trains between Brighton and Portsmouth, Littlehampton, or Southampton will instead run between Brighton and Worthing, and between Barnham and Portsmouth.

Where trains do run, service will be reduced, and trains which do run may be severely delayed.

Passengers already on the move are advised to expect delays and, where possible make alternative plans.

The Southern update says: “You can use your ticket to travel at no extra cost on:

Southern or Thameslink services on any reasonable route to your destination:

  • South Western Railway on routes between Southampton, Portsmouth, or Havant and Central London via Clapham Junction / London Waterloo
  • London Underground on any reasonable route
  • Metrobus routes between Gatwick / Three Bridges and Horsham including:
  • 2 for Crawley and Ifield
  • 3 for Crawley, Three Bridges, and Gatwick Airport
  • 23 for Crawley, Faygate, and Horsham
  • 200 for Horsham, Littlehaven, Faygate, Ifield, and Gatwick Airport
  • 84 / 272 / 281 / 291 for Crawley and Three Bridges
  • 400 for Crawley, Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport
  • 460 for Crawley, Gatwick Airport
  • Compass bus route 100 between Pulborough, Billingshurst, and Horsham.

Stagecoach Bus routes including:

  • 9 for Arundel, Littlehampton, Angmering Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham by Sea
  • 700 for Brighton to Littlehampton, and also between Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Chichester, Havant, and Portsmouth
  • 500 for Chichester, Barnham, and Littlehampton.

“Please note these alternatives will extend your journey by up to 60 minutes, especially if you are using alternative road transport.

“Some of these alternatives may also be much busier than usual, so you may need to wait longer than usual.”

Passengers who have not yet departed are advised not to travel.
