A by-election was held yesterday (Thursday) to elect a new member for Uckfield New Town ward on Wealden District Council. Just 4 votes separated the top two candidates.
The seat was won by an independent and was previously held by Labour. Wealden is currently a council with no overall control with a Liberal Democrat leader.
The the total votes were:
Helen Firth (The Conservative Party) 413
Donna French (Independent) 582 (Elected.)
George Wilson (Labour Party) 578
Donna French said on Facebook about her victory: “I would like to say what an enormous privilege and honour it is to be voted as the Independent District Councillor for Uckfield New Town.
“A massive thank you to all who showed their belief in me by voting today
It was incredibly close, with just four votes between myself and Labour candidate Keith Wilson.
“Thank you to both Helen and Keith for being so gracious with their congratulations for me.
“A huge thank you to the polling station staff who also conducted the count and recount past midnight.
“To all the friends, family and independent colleagues who have supported me and walked miles delivering leaflets and knocking on doors. You are all amazing!
