Intruder carried out sex attack, say police

A lifeboat crew managed to locate a kayaker who had been reported missing in a sea search that extended into the early hours but they were unable to save him.

The 53-year-old man, from Polegate, was reported overdue, having not returned when expected.

The alarm was raised late on Wednesday night (6 August) and he was located in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday 7 August).

The RNLI said: “At 11.43pm on Wednesday 6 August, both Eastbourne RNLI lifeboats were launched following reports of an overdue kayaker who had not returned home.

“The volunteer crews of the inshore lifeboat and all-weather lifeboat began an immediate co-ordinated search, covering both the shoreline and areas further out to sea.

“The operation was carried out in collaboration with HM Coastguard and other emergency services.

“During the search, the casualty was located in the water by the all-weather lifeboat and recovered by the inshore lifeboat crew.

“Casualty care was administered and the individual was transferred to the care of the appropriate authorities.

“Tragically, the outcome was not as hoped. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the individual during this difficult time.”

The man was recovered off the coast at Hollywell, Eastbourne. He was pronounced dead at the scene

Police said that there were no suspicious circumstances and that a file would be prepared for the coroner.
