Teacher pleads guilty to sexually assaulting pupil

Nick Baldock

A teacher at Lancing College pleaded guilty to a series of sex offences when he appeared in court yesterday (Friday 30 August).

Nick Baldock, 46, who lived at the school, admitted nine charges including sexually assaulting a pupil over 16 when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court.

Baldock, who worked as a history teacher at the £48,000-a-year independent school, was bailed to appear at Lewes Crown Court for sentence next month and faces years behind bars.

He left the school after his offending came to light and was arrested in December 2022.

Baldock, who worked at Lancing from 2017 to 2022, admitted publishing obscene material in a group chat, using the Telegram encrypted messaging platform and using WhatsApp, and sharing details of pupils.

Baldock faces sentence for one count of sexual assault, two counts of publishing an obscene article and three counts of knowingly disclosing personal data without consent, relating to six pupils.

He also faces sentence for three counts of making an indecent photograph of a child which do not relate to any current or former pupils at Lancing.

The indecent images included one listed as “category A”, the most serious type.

The offences took place from August 2021 to December 2022.

Baldock, unemployed, of Colster Way, in Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, has a bachelors degree in history from Cambridge University and a doctorate in the same subject from Yale.

Before he taught at Lancing, he was a history teacher at King Edward’s School, Birmingham.

Earlier this month he was due to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court.

At the time, Sussex Police said: “Anyone with any information that could help the investigation can contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 203 of 12/08.”
