Ringmer animal charity appeal for sick parrot

Ringmer-based animal charity Raystede is appealing for donations because demand for their animal welfare services has increased because of the cost-of-living crisis.

The poster parrot for this campaign is Boysie. He’s a red-lored amazon parrot who is described by Raystede as “a much-loved resident of our aviary”. Boysie has been there since 1995 and has been a “healthy, happy and feisty resident ever since”. However, sadly, his health has recently taken a turn for the worst and he is undertaking a six-month treatment plan.

Raystede says: “A vital CT scan and series of tests, performed by Celine our specialist avian vet, showed that Boysie was in fact a very poorly bird, suffering from a multitude of illnesses including an enlarged liver, inflammation of the air sacs, a fungal infection and dehydration. All of which could have been life-threatening if left untreated.” Boysie’s CT scan along cost £802.

The treatment plan includes a course of antibiotics, probiotics, a special focus on hydration and doses of milk thistle for his liver. He will also be quarantined in a large roomy cage to limit his exertion, which will help control his temperature and make it easier to give him his medication. He will also take half an hour a day in a brooder to provide warmth, humidity, oxygen therapy and nebulisation, in much greater comfort.
