A woman suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a crash yesterday afternoon (Friday 14 August).
Sussex Police said that the woman and another pedestrian were taken to hospital for treatment and a van driver had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The force said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision between a van and two pedestrians in East Street, Rye, on Friday afternoon.
“The vehicle, a white Mercedes Vito, mounted the pavement and struck a man and a woman outside a shop at about 1.30pm. Damage was also caused to the shop front.
“Both pedestrians were injured, with the woman sustaining potentially life-changing injuries. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
“A 37-year-old man, from Willesborough, Kent, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
“He was taken to custody and later released on bail pending further inquiries.
“The road was closed with the junction of the High Street while emergency services worked to treat the casualties, investigate the collision and for vehicle recovery.”
PC Sam Bourne, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “The area was very busy at the time of the collision.
“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed it or has any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the collision which could help our investigation.
“We would like to thank the local community for their compassion towards those involved and for their patience while emergency services dealt with the incident.”
