A valuable part of the local music scene was lost forever with the recent sad and untimely passing of Austen Gayton, who was known to many on the local Brighton music scene on account of his original long standing association with Studio 284 on Madeira Drive and more recently with Black Rock Subway Studios which he ran and recorded many bands in his time.
Austen certainly wasn’t confined to the studio though and he worked tirelessly for the cause, by driving many local bands and their equipment around, as well as supplying backline for many local gigs. Austen was also a musician in his own right, having played in Flatpig, Brian James Gang, 2000DS amongst others. He also filled in on bass duties on a few occasions for Constant State Of Terror.

Austen’s Black Rock Subway Studios legacy is hopefully going to carry on under his daughter Roxi’s supervision.
Austen will be sadly missed and it’s heartwarming to learn that many of his friends and music allies have got together in organising an all-day celebration as he was a huge part in Brighton’s music scene. In fact, all the bands that are participating at his memorial celebration rehearsed at his studio one time or another.
