Fire crews put out house fire in Peacehaven

Firefighters were called to tackle two wildfires in two days – today (Monday 25 August) and yesterday.

The fires were on farmland in Barcombe, near Lewes, this afternoon and at a farm at Monk’s Gate, near Horsham, yesterday.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 4.30pm today to reports of a wildfire at farmland in Town Littleworth Road, Barcombe.

“Four fire engines and two Land Rovers are at the scene including support from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

“Please avoid the area and local residents are asked to please close windows and doors.

“Crews are using two hose-reel jets and four wildfire beaters to tackle the fire.”

The fire service issued an update, saying: “As of 6.25pm the wildfire is reported to be out.

“Crews are currently damping down.

“There are no casualties reported.”

Yesterday, shortly after 3pm, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “We are at the scene of a large wild fire at Saxton Farm, Nuthurst Road, Monk’s Gate.

“Ten fire engines and a water carrier are in attendance.

“If near by, keep your doors and windows closed.

“Avoid the area to allow firefighters to work safely.”

In an update shortly after 4.15pm, the fire service added: “Fire crews have brought the fire under control and are dampening down before preparing to leave.”
