The owner of an abandoned bakery has been told to remove hoardings and replace the front windows and doors.
Kamalnayna and Jayant Bhimjiyani bought the Beacon Bakery in Hastings for £92,500 in 2004. In 2006, they applied and were granted planning permission to knock it down and build two semi-detached houses in its place.
But those plans never materialised, and for most of the last 20 years the bakery has instead stood empty, slowly crumbling.
Google Streetview images show that it has been completely boarded up since at least 2020 – and that the building’s facade has been crumbling behind the hoarding.
Now, Hastings Borough Council has ordered that the boards must come down and the frontage replaced.
It says the amenity of the town is adversely affected by the condition of the land.
The Bhimjiyanis now have until 21 January next year to take action.
The couple also own the freeholds to several fish and chip shops across the UK.
A year ago, urban explorers gained entry to the bakers and shot a video inside.
It shows bakery equipment abandoned inside the building, including mixers, ovens, piping nozzles, a bread slicer, a fridge/freezer and even the till.
