Plans to build 55 retirement flats in Oving have been approved by Chichester District Council.
The application, for land at the junction of Western Road and the Glenmore Business Park spur road, was given the nod by planning officers on August 23.
The development is one of the final jigsaw pieces of the Shopwyke Lakes strategic development master-plan – though it had been envisaged that the land would be used for employment.
But a report from the planning team stated that applicants, McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd and Hanbury Properties (Chichester) Ltd, had demonstrated that there had been no demand for employment space on the site.
So the proposal to build retirement flats instead was accepted.
The council received five objections to the plans.
Concerns raised included the level of parking exacerbating problems in the area, the ‘unimaginative’ design of the building, and whether there was a need for retirement flats in the area.
The new flats will be housed in an L-shaped three/four-storey block and will be for people aged 60+.
The site will be accessed via the spur road and there will be parking for 39 cars, including two disabled spaces and one for a staff vehicle.
