A stretch of the A27 is to close all weekend from 8pm on Friday (1 March), subject to the weather, National Highways said.
The closure will affect the eastbound side of the road between the Ashcombe roundabout, at Kingston, east of Lewes, to the Southerham roundabout, west of Lewes.
One lane will also be closed on the westbound side of the road, National Highways said today (Tuesday 27 February).
The organisation said that the weekend closure was for essential maintenance, adding: “Drivers are advised to plan ahead and leave extra time for journeys.
“A weekend closure takes place from this Friday (1 March) between Ashcombe (Kingston) and Southerham roundabouts on the A27 eastbound.
“Work involves essential carriageway maintenance for safety and improved journeys for road users.
“As well as repairs and improvements to the road surface, sensors will be replaced under the carriageway, road markings refreshed and waterproofing work carried out on the bridge.
“The A27 eastbound will be fully closed between the Ashcombe (Kingston) and Southerham roundabouts from 8pm Friday 1 March to 6am Monday 4 March 2024.
“There will also be a lane closed on the opposite carriageway for safety.”
If the weather is bad, the work may be rescheduled to the weekend of Friday 22 March to Monday 25 March.
National Highways said: “Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys and follow the official diversion route in place via the A270, A23, A259 and A26.
“For drivers wanting to join the westbound A27 at the Southerham roundabout from the A26 (Cuilfail Tunnel), please follow the eastbound diversion to the Beddingham roundabout and return.”
