The body of a woman has been recovered from the sea today (Sunday 30 August).

It is believed to be the body of Gayelynn Matthews who was reported missing yesterday.

The emergency services began searching for Ms Matthews, 69, from Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight, after she was last seen at around 11.30am yesterday.

Some of her belongings were found on the beach at Bembridge a short time later, prompting the involvement of the coastguard and RNLI as well as police across the Solent and in West Sussex.

The police said that they were becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of Ms Matthews and issued an urgent appeal for information about her whereabouts.

The search resumed this morning and, later, a body was recovered from the sea at Selsey.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: “Officers searching for missing Gayelynn Matthews have found a body.

“Formal identification has not yet taken place but her family have been informed.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the corner.”
