Tributes have been paid to a pastor who died after a sign was blown down at a Christian Festival yesterday (Friday 28 August).
Robert Guanco, 41, was known as Pastor Robert at the Jesus Living Water Church, based at the Sovereign Harbour Community Centre, Eastbourne.
Mr Guanco died and six others were injured, with four taken to hospital, after the sign – saying “Everything’s unmissable” – toppled at the Big Church Festival, at a site off Washington Road, Wiston, near Steyning.
A GoFundMe page has been set up help his family, with tens of thousands of pounds pouring in towards a target of £140,000.
Bishop Norman Ponce said: “It is with deeply broken hearts that we come together to support the family of our beloved brother, friend and pastor, Robert Earl Guanco, who tragically lost his life during the Big Church Festival 2026.
“What was meant to be a time of worship, fellowship and celebration became an unimaginable tragedy.
“A large sign at the festival fell, resulting in several people being injured and, tragically, claiming the life of our beloved Pastor Robert.
“Pastor Robert was more than a pastor. He was a beloved son, cherished brother, loving husband to Isaeli (Isay), a great father to Ellie and faithful servant of God.
“He was also a good friend, mentor and a blessing to so many people whose lives he touched.
“His life reflected humility, faith, love, compassion and service. Through his ministry, kindness, prayers and encouragement, he touched many lives. His passing is deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Today, his family – his wife, daughter, parents, siblings and loved ones – are facing an unimaginable loss. Alongside the deep grief of losing a husband, father, son and brother, they are also facing the practical and financial challenges that come with such an unexpected tragedy.
“We are kindly asking everyone to come together and support his family during this incredibly difficult season.
“Every donation, no matter how large or small, will make a meaningful difference. Your generosity will help ease some of the financial burden and allow the family to focus on grieving, healing and supporting one another through the days ahead.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullally said that she was “sad and shocked” and added: “I pray for his family, friends and loved ones as they grieve. I pray for those receiving treatment and the healthcare workers looking after them.
“And I pray too for the other festivalgoers, staff and event organisers as they come to terms with these tragic events.”
