Detectives are seeking witnesses and evidence after a sign fell and killed a man at a Christian festival yesterday (Friday 28 August).
Sussex Police said: “Police continue to appeal for information after a man was tragically killed at Big Church Festival, near Steyning.
“The 41-year-old, from Eastbourne, sadly died after a large sign fell at the site, in Washington Road.
“South East Coast Ambulance Service has confirmed a further five people were assessed and treated at the scene.
“Four of those patients were taken to local hospitals for further treatment, including two patients with more serious injuries and two patients with less serious injuries.
“Police were called at about 3.38pm on Friday 28 August and remain at the scene today (Saturday 29 August) where they will continue with inquiries to support the coronial process.
“Officers will also gather any evidence to assist Horsham District Council in this joint investigation.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who died and all others who have been affected by this tragic incident.
“We know there were thousands of people on site yesterday afternoon and we would urge anyone with any information or any relevant video footage to please come forward. You can report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Igloo.
“The festival organisers have chosen to close the event in light of this devastating incident and I would like to thank them and all other partners as we work together to establish the full circumstances.”
The Health and Safety Executive and the local authority have been informed.
