A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl on train from the Sussex coast to London Victoria.
The British Transport Police (BTP) issued a public appeal for help identifying a suspect last week within hours of the attack on a train from Littlehampton via Hove.
The BTP published a security camera picture of the suspect who left the train at Gatwick Airport station.
Today (Tuesday 11 July) the BTP said that a 19-year-old man, from Steyning, had been arrested on suspicion of assault by penetration.
The force said: “He has since been released on conditional police bail while inquiries continue. We are not seeking to identify anyone else in connection (with the incident).”
The BTP said last week: “Detectives are launching an urgent appeal following a serious sexual assault on a teenager on a train to London Victoria this afternoon (Wednesday 5 August).
“The incident happened at around 3.10pm on a train travelling to London Victoria.
“A 15-year-old girl was seriously sexually assaulted by a man on board the service before he left the train at Gatwick Airport station.
“Officers believe the man in the CCTV images may have information which could help with their inquiries.”
